Many sports clubs don’t last ten years.  But we have something really special here at DA that our athletes, parents and alumni believe in, and we will celebrate our 20th anniversary in 2012!  To comemorate the occasion we are planning to produce really SPECIAL clothing for our 2011-2012 season.

We are looking for a logo and slogan design that reflects our values, our achievements, and the culture of our club in all that we do – competitively, recreationally, and with our emerging programs such as Sitting Volleyball.

In return, you can win a Hundred Bucks cash, some SWAG, and bragging rights for an eternity.

Take a look at our design contest…  Durham Attack 20th Anniversary Contest

Dealing With Unethical Behaviour

Posted in 2010-2011, Tryouts, Uncategorized on September 10, 2010 by DurhamAttack

I have to admit, I’m losing some faith in our Ontario volleyball community.  We are hearing more and more reports of young athletes being taken into hallways at tryouts and being persuaded to commit to teams on the spot, without their parent’s knowledge.  Of parents being harassed on the telephone to commit to a team.   And of parents being pressured to pay hundreds of dollars as a deposit after being picked for a team and being told they will lose it if they try out for Durham Attack.  These aren’t rumours – these are problems that parents are phoning us with to ask advice on.

Our advice is to phone the Ontario Volleyball Association and ask how you should deal with this type of unethical behaviour, and what your rights are as a player in the OVA.  Start with:

Kristine Drakich – President: OVAPresident@ontariovolleyball.org

Jason Trepanier – Technical Director: jtrepanier@ontariovolleyball.org

If someone cares about the best interests of your child, they will not pressure them or you.  These are child athletes.  They will discuss options with the athlete and parents.  They will publish their Club’s plans, costs and coaches for the season.  They will politely invite you to play for them, but will leave your options open, in your best interests.

Unfortunately, you should prevent any coach or club from having discussions with your child unless you are present.  And you need to ask some tough questions.  Why do I have to commit now?  What are you asking me to sign and what does it mean?  Exactly what are the total costs for the season?  Exactly who is coaching?  What are you providing to my child?  And why are you pressuring us to make a decision this instant!?
