Registration Procedure

  1. Online registration is now closed.  No worries, it just made thing simpler for our tryout staff but is too hard to manage once tryouts start.  Instead please print and complete this Tryout Information Form and bring to the first tryout.  Or we have forms at the tryout if you want to fill it in when you arrive.
  2. Cost of tryouts is $30 per athlete.  Bring cash or cheque made out to “Durham Attack Volleyball Club”.
  3. Please arrive at the gym 20-30 minutes before your first tryout, to allow time for registration.
  4. Wondering where the facilities are located?  Directions are on our Maps page.

Tryout Protocol

In response to questions and complaints from parents  regarding clubs who pressure athletes to sign registration forms prematurely, the OVA has posted some guidelines re: tryout protocol.  We ask that you review them here on the OVA web site so that you can ensure that everyone has your athlete’s best interests at heart.   If you feel you have been unduly pressured then report it to the OVA: scarroll@ontariovolleyball.org.

Questions?

If you have any questions regarding our tryouts, our programs and our fees please email us info@durhamattack.org or ask us at tryouts.

2012 – 2013 Tryout Schedule – Updated Sept 18th

Posted in 2012-2013, Tryouts on August 16, 2012 by DurhamAttack

Here is our schedule. last updated September 18th.

Durham Attack 2012-2013 Tryout Schedule

Note Sept 18th:  Final tryouts on Wednesday Sept 19th have moved to Durham College Oshawa.

Note Sept 17th:  final tryouts for 13-14u girls and 13-14u boys will be held at Pineridge this Wednesday Sept 19th.  Please check back again before the tryout as there is a possibility that the site will change to Durham College.

Note: Sept 7th from Durham College: A new parking system goes into place on Monday, Sept. 10/12.  Parking on the weekends & evenings will still be free.  It is CRITICAL that when you/your guests enter a gated lot, the driver takes a ticket from the machine and MUST keep this ticket to exit the same lot at no charge.  If the ticket is lost, parking fees will be incurred and we cannot reverse that.  We recommend leaving the ticket in the vehicle window so that it does not get lost and cause people problems.

Note: please check the schedule.  It appears that when the not above was added that WordPress reverted to an old copy of the schedule.  16U girls are still at Pineridge and 17/18u boys are at Durham College.

We look forward to seeing you at tryouts!

Plans for 2012-2013

We are further expanding our program in 2012-2013 with additional modes of training that are important to elite athletes.  We’ll provide more information once plans are finalized.

Teambuilding remains a core tenet of our philosophy.  All of our teams attend a Teambuilding camp at Madawaska, once the team is selected.  This is a very important part of our program that receives rave reviews from athletes and parents.  16-18U athletes will be at camp from the evening of Friday Sept 14th to Sunday Sept 16th.  13-15U athletes will be at camp from the evening of Friday Sept 21st to Sunday September 23rd.  This is not an optional component of our program – it is mandatory for our athletes – if you are playing for DA we are making this investment in you.

Volunteers

We’re looking for a few more volunteers to help register athletes at tryouts.  If you can assist please contact Larry Skelly (larry@durhamattack.org) with where and when.

Questions?

If you have any questions please email us info@durhamattack.org or ask us at tryouts.

Madawaska!!! Important Info for Parents

Posted in 2011-2012, Tryouts on September 8, 2011 by DurhamAttack

One of the most highly rated activities of our teams is their Teambuilding weekend at Camp Madawaska.  We ran a survey after last year’s camps, and the consensus of more than a hundred responses, from both athletes and parents, was that this was one of the best things they had ever participated in!!!!

We have confirmed dates for our athletes’ Madawaska teambuilding weekends, and they are :

  • Coaches – September 9th – 11th
  • 16u- 18u Girls and Boys – September 16th-18th
  • 13u – 15u Girls and 15u Boys – September 23rd-25th
  • 14u Boys – date TBD for a local Teambuilding weekend; we are extending the tryouts at this age and by the time we finish it will be too cold to go to camp

If you make a Durham Attack team then you get to be part of one of our teambuilding weekends!  The cost to our athletes of attending Madawaska  is $200 + HST – a cost that our parents from last year considered to be ‘great value’..

Parents – never too early to introduce this topic, but same as last year we will be looking for drivers and chaperones, and as always Ian and Carrie Eibbitt recognize the importance of family support for our teams and have been very gracious, extending an offer of a $75 + HST weekend for parent chaperones and parent drivers, including all food and accommodations but excluding all the activities.  If you attended last year you know that this is an amazing deal for two days food and accommodations, and a fun weekend to attend.

Any questions… send me an email to larry@durhamattack.org or ian@madawaskacamps.com

Many sports clubs don’t last ten years.  But we have something really special here at DA that our athletes, parents and alumni believe in, and we will celebrate our 20th anniversary in 2012!  To comemorate the occasion we are planning to produce really SPECIAL clothing for our 2011-2012 season.

We are looking for a logo and slogan design that reflects our values, our achievements, and the culture of our club in all that we do – competitively, recreationally, and with our emerging programs such as Sitting Volleyball.

In return, you can win a Hundred Bucks cash, some SWAG, and bragging rights for an eternity.

We have had thousands of hits on our web site this past week – everyone is looking for our tryout schedule.  Here is some logistical information about our tryouts…

  1. Everyone is welcome!   We always do what is best for our athletes – past and present, and run teams with different skill levels at each age group.  DO NOT decide you shouldn’t try out for Durham Attack because you don’t think you will make it.  Always give it a shot – we believe in Long Term Athlete Development which means we aren’t necessarily looking for the athlete with the best skills today.  Some of our most successful athletes were not obvious selections at our tryouts.  We invest in our athletes long term.
  2. We have room for under age athletes.  We run a younger team at the entry level ages – in otherwords we have a 12U team for girls (playing 13U) and a 13U team for boys (playing 14U).
  3. We suggest you try out for all the clubs you are interested in.  We believe that parents see through clubs that penalize players who attend our tryouts, who copy our tryout schedule so they can pressure athletes,  and who coerce athletes to sign forms or commit to clubs at the first tryout.  We don’t rearrange our schedule to make your life difficult and prevent you from trying out for other clubs.  As always we put the athletes interests first.
  4. You do not have to attend every tryout.  We know your schedule is busy, so attend as many as you are able to.  But please phone us so that we know your are coming or intend to come back.  Girls phone Janet Cairns at 905-725-3092.  Boys phone Larry Skelly at 905-925-0334.
  5. Please complete our Tryout Registration Form in advance and bring it with you, and pay your tryout fee by cheque if you can.
  6. Our tryouts this year are at Durham College, J Clarke Richardson and Pine Ridge.  You can find maps on our maps page.

If you have any other questions please phone us at the numbers above.

Dealing With Unethical Behaviour

Posted in 2010-2011, Tryouts, Uncategorized on September 10, 2010 by DurhamAttack

I have to admit, I’m losing some faith in our Ontario volleyball community.  We are hearing more and more reports of young athletes being taken into hallways at tryouts and being persuaded to commit to teams on the spot, without their parent’s knowledge.  Of parents being harassed on the telephone to commit to a team.   And of parents being pressured to pay hundreds of dollars as a deposit after being picked for a team and being told they will lose it if they try out for Durham Attack.  These aren’t rumours – these are problems that parents are phoning us with to ask advice on.

Our advice is to phone the Ontario Volleyball Association and ask how you should deal with this type of unethical behaviour, and what your rights are as a player in the OVA.  Start with:

Kristine Drakich – President: OVAPresident@ontariovolleyball.org

Jason Trepanier – Technical Director: jtrepanier@ontariovolleyball.org

If someone cares about the best interests of your child, they will not pressure them or you.  These are child athletes.  They will discuss options with the athlete and parents.  They will publish their Club’s plans, costs and coaches for the season.  They will politely invite you to play for them, but will leave your options open, in your best interests.

Unfortunately, you should prevent any coach or club from having discussions with your child unless you are present.  And you need to ask some tough questions.  Why do I have to commit now?  What are you asking me to sign and what does it mean?  Exactly what are the total costs for the season?  Exactly who is coaching?  What are you providing to my child?  And why are you pressuring us to make a decision this instant!?
