Many sports clubs don’t last ten years.  But we have something really special here at DA that our athletes, parents and alumni believe in, and we will celebrate our 20th anniversary in 2012!  To comemorate the occasion we are planning to produce really SPECIAL clothing for our 2011-2012 season.

We are looking for a logo and slogan design that reflects our values, our achievements, and the culture of our club in all that we do – competitively, recreationally, and with our emerging programs such as Sitting Volleyball.

In return, you can win a Hundred Bucks cash, some SWAG, and bragging rights for an eternity.

DA in 2010-2011!!!

Posted in Clinics, Coaches, Fanwear, Parents on August 20, 2010 by DurhamAttack

Aug 20, 2010.  The summer is winding down quickly and we’ll soon be back in the gym.  Players have been working hard on the beach and on our regional and provincial teams.  Our executive have also been hard at work; planning for next season started in early April, believe it or not, and we have a lot of exciting changes and additions for 2010-2011.  Here are some of them, off the top of my head.

Technical Directors.  We have taken the important step of defining two new Technical Director positions for 2010, and have carefully chosen the  people who will play those roles.  We received a number of applicants and had the difficult job of selecting two individuals.  We are happy to announce that our Technical Directors for 2010-2011 are Evan Williams and Hoi Leung.  Both are local, long term Durham coaches that are well respected in the volleyball community.

Evan is an assistant coach for the University of Western Ontario.  He was selected by the OVA to coach Team Ontario for both 2009 and 2010 and his 18U Team Ontario finished #1 in Canada this past summer.  As a Club coach for Durham Attack, Evan coached our 1991 (“Big Black”) girls to four of their seven straight National Championships.  Widely recognized as one of the premiere technical coaches in the province, Evan is teaching the first high school volleyball curriculum in the province at Henry Street High School this Fall.

Evan will be assisted by Hoi Leung who, prior to starting a family, was assistant coach for the University of Toronto Blues.  At the Club level Hoi has also coached a number of provincial and national champions.

Supported by funding from General Motors of Canada, Evan and Hoi will be working to increase the skills of all our athletes and coaches within Durham Attack.  They have been hard at work this summer, working with a working group of our coaches, preparing for an intensive coach training weekend at Madawaska in September.

Physical Training. We are expanding our programs again this year with physical training programs at all ages from 13U-18U, overseen by our Strength and Conditioning coach Mike Slean.  Mike was one of the most successful beach and indoor players in the province, and an expert volleyball trainer called on by the OVA to help train its provincial teams. Mike will be conducting baseline physical testing for all out 200+ athletes in late September.  Based on our physical testing results, Mike will implement programs for our athletes.

Madawaska.  As a Club we are extremely thankful to have Ian Eibbitt as a coach and advisor in our ranks.   Ian has a long history in volleyball, including running the hugely successful and popular Madawaska volleyball camp.  In September of 2009 we took our coaches to Madawaska for a weekend of leadership training and team building.  We feel so strongly about how important this is to our teams that this year we are taking the entire club to Madawaska.   We have booked the weekends of September 10th (coaches), September 17th (16u-18u) and September 24th (13u-15u).  Busing will be provided.   Many other sports teams recognize the importance of building cohesive teams early in the season and use Madawaska to do this.  We are breaking new ground, again, and doing this with our entire Club.   Sharing Madawaska with us the first weekend will be the Ottawa Mavericks coaching staff, who heard what a great experience it was for our coaches last year.  We’re looking forward to a lot of good discussion with our friends from the Mavs.

Uniforms.  If you thought last year’s uniforms were nice, wait until you see this year’s!  Marcel and Freddy  (from Overkill) have already been hard at work taking what was already one of the nicest uniforms in the OVA, and making it even better.    They are currently being custom-manufacturered so we will have our uniforms early this season.  They will feature a new technology that is simply stunnning.  Can’t say any more at this point.

Coaches.  Our coaching staff is filled out and ready for tryouts.  We have already had a couple of meetings preparing our coaches for this season, with more to come.  As always, we will finalize the coaching assignments once we have gottten through tryouts and selected our teams.

Executive and Operating Committee.  A number of people have come forward to volunteer to assist us next season.  Parents of athletes, parents of alumni, and even parents of coaches have volunteered to take on roles next season.  Thank-you – the support for our athletes and coaches  is overwhelming!!!

We are still looking for assistance and have a couple of very important roles to fill.  Our Facilities Coordinator will work with Janet and Scott to plan our initial practice schedule, and will then be our liason with the Durham Board for gym changes.  Our Tournament Director will liase with the OVA and our teams to secure the tournaments we want to host. These are important roles but not ‘full time’ like some of our other positions.   If you have some time and are interesting in giving back to the Club please contact Janet or I.

Making Dreams Possible.  We are the only volleyball club in Canada to receive a GM grant for this season, and our funded programs are well underway.  Our Technical Directors will ensure that this money is well spent furthering the development of our coaches and athletes.

Facility.  Our medium-term goal has always been to secure our own facility.  This has begun in earnest as we have had discussions with other sports clubs who have approached us about sharing space, and have jointly looked at some of the space that is available. We are continuing to pursue this goal, and if you have some expertise that can help and want to join the committee working on this, then please let us know.

Lots of exciting new things for the coming season!
