Huge Loss to Our Local Volleyball Community: Stan ‘The Man’ Marchut

Posted in 2011-2012, Coaches on March 30, 2012 by DurhamAttack

Durham College’s legendary volleyball coach passes away

Visitation for Stan Marchut:
Oshawa Funeral Home
Friday, March 30th 2pm to 4pm & 7pm to 9pm
847 King Street West, Oshawa | 905-721-1234

OSHAWA — In his 24-year coaching career, Durham College women’s volleyball coach Stan Marchut racked up numerous awards and accolades, including CCAA coach of the year in 1999 as well as six OCAA coach of the year awards.

Marchut passed away late Sunday night due to complications from heart surgery at age 74. Known to his friends as Stan ‘The Man’, Marchut had a long and illustrious career in sports and education.

Ken Babcock, Durham College and UOIT’s athletic director, was one of the closest people to Marchut in the athletic department.

“He’s one of the people that comes along once in awhile and changes everything,” Babcock said.

“He has touched a whole bunch of people,” Babcock continued. “He’s deserving of a whole bunch of things we can’t even give to him.”

Current head coach of the team, Shane Christopher, was Marchut’s assistant coach in his final years at Durham. According to Christopher the reason Marchut was such a good coach was because of the way he treated his players.

“They respected him and they would do anything he asked them to because of that respect,” Christopher said. “It’s a sad day.”

Former player under Marchut and current assistant coach, Mandi Doris, remembers Marchut fondly.

“If you did something really well he would sit on the bench, stick his arm out with his thumb up and say good job,” Doris said.

Doris also said she knew Marchut wasn’t well and in the back of her mind she knew it was coming, but it is always a shock to lose a mentor and friend.

Marchut’s win percentage as a coach at Durham was .723 and he had over 350 wins in his 24-year career, which is the highest in CCAA history.

Under Marchut, the women’s volleyball team made the playoffs 23 times, missing out only once in his entire career. He took the team to four provincial championship medals and a bronze CCAA medal in his second year of coaching the team.

Before becoming Durham’s most winning coach, Marchut was a phys-ed teacher at Eastdale C.V.I in Oshawa and coached their football, basketball and volleyball teams to numerous championship victories.

In 2010 Marchut was inducted into the Oshawa Sports Hall of Fame. He was also inducted into Durham College’s Sports Hall of Fame in 2001 while still coaching the team. He is only the second person in Durham’s hall of fame history to have that honour.

He will go down in the history books as a legendary coach not only at Durham College, but in the history of the Canadian College Athletic Association

Permit Cancellation – Nottingham – April 19th

Posted in 2011-2012, Permit cancellation, Urgent on March 26, 2012 by DurhamAttack

Our permit for Nottingham has been cancelled on April 19th, due to a school event.  Please have your coaches work with Janis (janis.buckley01@gmail.com) to find another gym.

This time of season, as we get into Provincials, we always have surplus gyms on Thursdays (when teams are travelling to Waterloo) and Mondays (when teams who played three days need a break.)

Coaches – if you anticipate not using gyms – please let Janis know that also.
