Sitting Volleyball Starts Jan 20th at Frenchman’s Bay PS

Posted in 2011-2012, Sitting Volleyball on January 13, 2012 by DurhamAttack

Our Sitting Volleyball program is running on Fridays from 6-8 PM, at Frenchmans Bay Public School in Pickering, starting on January 20th.  It is open to all – including disabled and able-bodied athletes.  From these sessions we will be filding a team in the inaugural Ontario Provincial Sitting Volleyball Championship at RIM Park in Waterloo in April.  If you are interested in trying it out please contact Lawrence Flynn – flynn_lawrence@hotmail.com.

Durham Attack Teams – sitting volleyball is a great way to develop skills, and a lot of fun.  Again this year, if you support our program on a Friday night by attending as a team, we will contribute $100 towards a team dinner afterwards.

Looking for House League Coaches!

Posted in House League & SPIKES on January 13, 2012 by DurhamAttack

Our houseleague program begins on Sunday, January 15.  We are still looking for a few coaches to work with the athletes and are hoping that some you will take advantage of this opprotunity to give something back to the club and help foster the love of volleyball in younger athletes.

We are in specific need for coaches with our Bantam program which runs from 10:30-12:00 and/or12:00-1:30. Coaches can either receive community service hours, 15 in total, or receive a $75.00 fund-raising credit.

Coaches will be given a team to work with for the ten weeks of the season. Each session involves 30 minutes of skill development. There will be coaches who will plan and demonstrate the drills and help the young coach work through the drills with their team. Players rotate through all of the positions so substitutions are not an issue either.

If anyone is interested, please have them send Chris an email at uncfan97@yahoo.ca.

Thank you for your support. Your assistance helps us develop our athletes.

In Memory of Marcel Vandenheuvel

Posted in 2011-2012, Alumni, Coaches, Parents on December 29, 2011 by DurhamAttack

It is with deep sadness that I write that our close friend and colleague Marcel Vandenheuvel passed away the morning of December 27th, while at home with his family. Marcel was a very important member of our club executive and an integral part of our club, and we are deeply indebted to Marcel and to his family.

Marcel managed our uniforms and registration for a number of years and worked year round to make sure that our athletes and coaches had the best clothing available. While battling cancer for the past year Marcel continued to attend to the myriad of details required to get our club up and running, and our athletes outfitted, for this season. It was only within the past few weeks that he stepped down from his position.  Marcel’s daughter Nicole is a long-standing member of our club and a coach of our 16u girls team this season. Marcel’s wife Leslie worked alongside Marcel each year in taking care of registration and uniforms.

Marcel is a shining example of all that is good about community sports organizations and volunteerism.   He will be deeply missed both as a friend and colleague and as a member of our volleyball community.

We have offered the family the full support of their friends and colleagues during this difficult time. As we become aware of anything we can do to help we will let you know.

A funeral service will be held at:

The Simple Alternative Funeral Centre
1057 Brock Road, Pickering

Visitation:  Wednesday January 4th; 2:00 – 4:00; 6:00 – 8:00

Service:  Thursday January 5th at 11:30 am

Reception:  At the funeral home immediately after the service.

***I’m told that parking is limited, so please car pool if you  are able.***

Condolences can be sent to:

The Vandenheuvels,
1021 Moorelands Cr
Pickering, ON
L1W 3K3

We will keep you informed as we learn of any other details.  Please keep Marcel’s family in your thoughts during this difficult time.
